Fruit flies are used to model the impact of LED lighting on circadian rhythm.
Controls, Communications & Subsystems Thrust
This thrust works with the output of the Sources and Sensors thrusts to develop integrated engineered systems capable of achieving the center goals of delivering energy savings, health benefits and productivity improvements.
Controls Strategic Goals
The Controls work focuses on lighting system controls for self-commissioning and adaptive control – key features of smart lighting systems that will impact smart building and smart grid interfaces. Advances in Sources and Sensors require the development of new control methodologies.
Controls Projects
- Distributed Light Field Control Systems - John Wen, RPI
- Light Transport Analysis - Pradeep Sen, UNM
- Healthy Lighting: Circadian Rhythm Modeling - John Wen, RPI
Communications Strategic Goals
This work concentrates on embedding communications capabilities into lighting systems to enhance the immersive environment, otherwise known as Visible Light Communications (VLC). VLC allows for significant advantages over current wireless technologies in delivering data to humans at higher speeds, increased bandwidth, privacy, and the ability to localize data delivery.
Communications Projects
- High Bandwidth Lighting Systems for Data Communications - Tom Little, BU
- Modulation Schemes / LED Design for VLC - Partha Dutta, RPI
- Mobility and Networking with Directional Communications - Tom Little, BU and Mona Hella, RPI
- Integrated Driver Designs for Lighting Systems - Leila Parsa, RPI
Subsystems Strategic Goals
Subsystems projects draw work from all thrusts (sources, sensors, controls and communications) to integrate engineered systems that will enable the achievement of center goals - energy savings, health benefits and productivity improvements.
Subsystems Projects
