Aug 4, 2011:
The Summer Outreach Program at RPI for undergraduate students and teachers came to an end, and final presentations took place on August 4, 2011. Presenters included 18 students from College of St. Rose, Oberlin College, Morehouse College, Spelman College, Holyoke College, Williams College, Morgan State University, Howard University, Northeastern University, Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology, and the University of Southern California and 4 teachers from Guilderland H.S., Mohonasen H.S., Bethlehem Central H.S., and Niskayuna H.S. Remote attendance was possible for center members.

June 23, 2011:
Smart Lighting ERC held its first webinar highlighting ERC research. Partha Dutta, ERC Deputy Director, presented his research on High-Efficiency Phosphors for LEDs. This webinar series is open only to members of organizations that are affiliated with the center.

June 20-22, 2011:
The Smart Lighting ERC is a supporting organization of the Smart Lighting Value Chain Summit in Santa Clara, CA. Dr. Silvia Mioc, director of industrial collaborations and innovation will speak at the Pre-Summit Symposium: The Future of Smart Lighting. Her talk is titled "Immersive Smart Lighting Systems to Increase Energy Efficiency, Improve Human Health, and Enable High-Speed Data Access". She will describe the center's efforts to create an innovation ecosystem to develop new technologies and facilitate their translation into products. Click here

In the first event of the industrial tutorial series, Angelo Arecchi, P.E., Manager of Special Projects at Labsphere, Inc. will discuss in detail the quantitative descriptions of the lumen, light source color, color temperature and correlated color temperature, color rendering, and many other visual attributes of a light source.

Smart Lighting Challenge at Core Partner Boston University: Students are Invited to Devise Real-Life Solutions, Win Cash
What: The Smart Lighting Challenge is a student competition focused on the optimal design, manufacturing process and operational strategy for solid state lighting technologies under development at the BU Smart Lighting Engineering Research Center. $1600 in prizes to be awarded. Teams will assume the role of product developer, and have two weeks to prepare their 15 min presentation to convince a panel of judges to adopt their strategy. Read more about it here.

For the first time, a joint seminar with the Center for Future Energy Systems and the Lighting Research Center was held at Rensselaer. James Gaines from Philips Research talked about "Solid State Lighting - White Light for General Illumination". Click here

Seminar in the Entrepreneurial Series at Core Partner University of New Mexico
Topic: The Four Pillars of Successful Startups - and Where to Go from There - What every entrepreneur needs to know about building a sustainable company", Barbara Kline, The Breakthrough Center.
Abstract: There are four pillars upon which successful startups are based: passion, leadership, adequate funding and technical savvy. But startups have to grow - or die. Ms. Kline will discuss how these Four Pillars interact - in theory and with examples - to create a viable venture, as well as the steps necessary to make sure the company is well positioned to take the next step - 2nd Stage Growth.
