Academic Partners
Smart Lighting Engineering Research Center, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute
The SMART LIGHTING ERC is a partnership of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, the lead university, with two core research partner universities - Boston University and the University of New Mexico - and three outreach universities: Howard University, Morgan State University, and Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology.
In order to achieve global success in transforming lighting technologies, we also partner with international universities. The international program will provide ERC students with the preparation they will need to succeed in an increasingly interconnected world.
While Rensselaer has substantial expertise and a record of accomplishments in all three research thrusts, BU and UNM have particular emphases in transportation/communications and nanotechnology, respectively.

Rensselaer Polytechnic InstituteRensselaer Polytechnic Institute was established in 1824 as the first technological university in the English-speaking world. The Institute was organized around a concept considered quite radical for the time: that students should actively engage with their studies by performing experiments and exploring other participatory forms of learning, rather than sitting passively in lectures. Rensselaer offers degrees from five schools: Engineering; Science; Architecture; Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences; and the Lally School of Management & Technology; as well as an interdisciplinary degree in Information Technology. Rensselaer offers more than 145 programs at the bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral levels. Students are encouraged to work in interdisciplinary programs that allow them to combine scholarly work from several departments or schools. The Institute is especially well-known for its success in the transfer of technology from the laboratory to the marketplace so that new discoveries and inventions benefit human life, protect the environment, and strengthen economic development. |
